The Last Mile of the Player Journey: Modern Smart Access Control for Sports Facilities

Booking a tennis court has never been easier.
Players can search for available courts, reserve a slot online, and receive confirmation within seconds. Over the past decade, sports facilities have invested heavily in digital booking systems to make reservations more convenient and efficient.
But here's the question most operators never ask:
What happens after the booking is confirmed?
Imagine a player arriving for a 7:00 p.m. reservation after driving across town, only to find the court gate locked. A simple booking suddenly turns into a phone call to the facility manager, who now has to locate a staff member or caretaker to unlock the gate. What should have been a seamless customer experience quickly becomes an operational issue.
The reality is that while booking has become digital, access often hasn't. Many sports facilities still rely on physical keys, manual gate unlocking, or onsite staff to bridge the gap between an online reservation and actually getting onto the court.
This is what we call the last mile of the player journey.
It's the point where an excellent digital booking experience can either be completed—or completely undone.
Recognising this gap, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) set out to modernize not only how players reserve courts, but also how they access them.
The Best Technology Is the One Players Never Notice
USTA already had an established booking ecosystem through Serve Tennis, its tennis management platform that powers court reservations across participating facilities. From a player's perspective, the booking experience already worked well. As such, USTA wanted technology that quietly worked in the background, without creating new or additional friction.
By integrating Serve Tennis with igloo's smart access control software through iglooconnect's API integration, the booking platform remains the single customer interface while igloo automates every step of physical access.
For players, nothing changes. They continue booking courts through Serve Tennis exactly as they always have. The difference happens entirely behind the scenes.

Once a reservation is confirmed, igloo automatically generates a secure, time-bound PIN that's valid only for the player's booking window. Upon arrival, the player simply enters the PIN into the igloo Keypad (EK2), which communicates with the igloo Switch Door Controller (SW1X) to unlock the electronic gate.
No physical keys.
No staff intervention.
No disruption to the existing booking experience.
Just a seamless transition from reservation to court access.
Closing the Gap Between Booking and Access
The complete player journey now looks like this:
Player reserves a court on USTA's booking platform.
igloo automatically generates a unique, time-bound PIN.
The player receives the credential before arriving.
The PIN is entered on the igloo Keypad (EK2).
The igloo Switch Door Controller (SW1X) unlocks the gate.
Access automatically expires when the booking ends.
For players, the experience feels effortless.
For operators, an entire manual workflow simply disappears.
Built for Outdoor Sports Facilities
Outdoor recreation facilities present a unique set of deployment challenges. Court entrances are often located away from buildings, making Wi-Fi coverage unreliable or expensive to install. Extending network infrastructure to every gate can significantly increase deployment costs, especially across multiple sites.
igloo's smart access control solution was designed with these environments in mind.
Instead of relying on a constant internet connection, igloo generates secure offline credentials that work without Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. This allows facilities to automate access with only a 24VDC power supply, significantly reducing deployment complexity and infrastructure costs.
The Richfield pilot further demonstrates this flexibility, with the entire installation powered using solar energy.
More Than Automated Gates
At first glance, this project appears to be about automating gate access.
In reality, it's about creating a better experience for everyone involved.
For Players
Players know their court will be available when they arrive. There are no physical keys to collect, no staff to locate, and no uncertainty about gaining access. Booking and entry become one continuous experience.
For Facility Operators
Manual gate management is replaced with automated, cloud-managed access. Staff spend less time handling access requests while gaining greater visibility into facility usage and booking activity.
For USTA
Rather than solving access for a single site, USTA established a repeatable deployment model that can be expanded across additional tennis facilities while maintaining the same familiar booking experience for players.
Why igloo?
USTA selected igloo because the platform could seamlessly complement its existing booking ecosystem while meeting the unique requirements of outdoor sports facilities.
Key advantages included:
Platform integrates with existing booking software
Cloud-based smart access control software
Outdoor-ready smart gate lock solution
Lower deployment costs with no Wi-Fi or additional infrastructure required
Enterprise-ready access control platform built for outdoor sports facilities
The Future of Sports Facility Access
For years, sports facilities have focused on improving how players book courts.
USTA's deployment demonstrates that the next opportunity isn't improving reservations—it's improving everything that happens after them.
When booking and physical access become one connected journey, players enjoy a better experience, operators spend less time managing facilities, and organizations gain a scalable model that can grow alongside their network.
The best booking experience doesn't end with a confirmation email.
It ends when players walk straight onto the court.
And if your reservation platform already knows who booked the facility and when, why should operators still manage physical keys, manual gate access or on-site unlocks?
Whether you're managing public tennis courts, pickleball facilities, sports clubs or other shared amenities, igloo works with your existing reservation platform through flexible API integrations—eliminating the need to replace systems that already work while modernizing the entire booking-to-entry experience.
If you're exploring ways to modernize facility access while reducing operational overhead, we'd love to show you how.
